Effective leaders work very hard to succeed, but often at the cost of their own souls. They are challenged to keep themselves emotionally and spiritually healthy in order to survive success to keep their humanity intact. This is the work within the work, and the topic of today’s podcast.

Today we turn the tables as we re-air an interview Steve gave to Warren Smith, publisher of "WORLD "magazine, and producer and host of the nationally syndicated radio program "Listening In." The contents of the interview are timeless and perhaps more compelling now than when it was recorded a few years ago. It's a conversation you won't want to miss!

FOR OUR LISTENERS - A Self-Assessment Exercise on The State of Your Soul: Doing a self-assessment of the State of your Soul requires taking a look in the mirror to see how you are REALLY doing. By “really doing,” I mean in all aspects of your life. By reflecting on these questions, you’ll have an opportunity to survey your life and gain awareness of what is going on and how things are.

The four chambers of the human/spiritual heart:

1st Quadrant—surface, acquaintance

2nd Quadrant- many friends, social, small group

3rd Quadrant- only a few know this chamber and

for some no one.

4th Quadrant- not even ourselves know what is really “deep within”…this was the area that most concerned Jesus.

The Inner Life:

The Inner life—the great space where we encounter, experience and are embraced by God.

The Inner life—the place of great struggle, torment and reservoir of shame, guilt and pain.

The Inner life—the place of great peace, satisfaction and contentment…the seedbed of the abundant life.
